Exmoor National Park Authority and Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society are joining forces to hold the 11th Archaeology Forum and Joint Annual Archaeological Symposium on Saturday 12 March 2011 from 10am in Dulverton Town Hall.
Speakers on the day include Dr. Mark Gillings who will be giving the keynote lecture on The Miniliths of Exmoor, Paula Gardiner will discuss Exmoor’s Mesolithic Landscapes, and Rob Wilson-North and Jessica Turner from Exmoor National Park Authority will be outlining some of the recent work carried out and how this is changing perceptions of Exmoor’s past and highlighting its fragility.
Commenting on the day David Dawson from the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society said: “Archaeology is as popular as ever and this event brings to a public audience the exciting work that has happened in the previous year. It also provides an opportunity for people to ask questions and discuss with the archaeologists concerned.
“The range of work undertaken is always difficult to compress into a day, but is typical of the archaeology routinely carried out in our area. Here we will be treated to the spectacular find of the Frome Hoard, the largest hoard of coins of its date found in Britain and which is leading to a new understanding of the late Roman period, research excavation of the miniliths of Exmoor, monuments that have puzzled archaeologists for many years, recording and excavation carried out at Taunton Castle during the conversion into the new Museum of Somerset and accounts of the fieldwork carried out in Exmoor.”
Mr Dawson continued: “Exmoor National Park Authority has an enviable reputation for its work to record, understand, care for and increase public awareness of the historic environment of the National Park. During the Forum we will hear how all this work changes our view of the past of our area and how, whilst we may resolve some old questions, many more will have arisen.”
The Forum costs £15 per person, including tea/coffee and lunch or £10 without lunch. Booking is essential for more information telephone Sue Parkman on 01398 322211.
