Landscape Conference

On 31st March 2007 Exmoor National Park Authority and the Exmoor Society jointly hosted a conference on the subject of landscape. Speakers included Professor Adrian Phillips, Professor Carys Swanwick, Tom Oliver from Campaign to Protect Rural England, Richard Partington of Natural England, Sarah Bryan from Exmoor National Park Authority and Emma-Jane Preece.

The event focussed on the IUCN Landscape Convention, which the UK Government has recently signed, techniques of Landscape Character Assessment, Tranquilitty and Tranquilitty mapping, Natural England’s policy on landscape, the Exmoor Landscape Character Assessment and issues affecting the landscape of Exmoor National Park.

Delegates were invited to the morning session and included representatives of Natural England, the Environment Agency, the National Trust and National Park Authority, surrounding Local Authorities, Campaign to Protect Rural England, the Exmoor Society, private practitioners and landowners. Methods for assessing and describing the landscape were presented, and the significance of Exmoor’s unique and distinctive landscape was reinforced, as was the importance of the tranquillity found on Exmoor. The afternoon lecture by Professor Adrian Phillips stimulated thought and discussion on the meaning and value of landscapes.
