CTC off-road trail Grading System

GRADE

EASY

MODERATE

DIFFICULT

SEVERE

SUITABLE FOR Non cyclists & families children 4 yrs plus riding solo, bikes with child seats or trailers, touring bikes, bikes for those with disabilities. Occasional cyclists with some experience of road use or easy trails, reasonably fit families, children 10 plus yrs riding solo, suitable for mountain bikes, hybrids or robust touring bikes. Regular cyclists with navigational skills and experience of moderate trails.  Suitable for off-road quality mountain bikes Expert mountain bikers with navigational skills who will expect and relish technical challenges
TRAIL TYPES Forestry tracks and some well surfaced unclassified roads. As ‘green’ plus bridleways and byways & un-surfaced unclassified roads. Any usable trail with pushing or portage. Any, but with the expectation of technical riding which could include unforgiving terrain, severe climbs & descents, or considerable distances.
GRADIENT Shallow climbs & descents capable of being ridden by children and less fit adults. Shallow/moderate climbs +/- short sections of steeper climbs which may have to be walked. A wide range of climbs and descents of a challenging nature. Any rideable or usable gradient.  May include ‘drop offs’.
SURFACE / WIDTH Blacktop or compacted gravel.  Essentially smooth with a minimum content. Mostly stone or earth based surfaces that are still rideable when wet, 2 meter width. Any usable surface.  Likely to include single track and other technical sections. All off road and including a significant proportion of single track with challenging surfaces.
ACCEPTABLE HAZARDS These trails carry a very low risk of encountering hazards. Some loose surfaces, ruts, potholes and or tree roots may be expected. Hazards should be expected. Hazards should be expected riders should proceed with caution!
MAXIMUM CLIMB? 50 metres 100 metres 500 metres 1000 metres

Note: These grades have been compiled as a guide only.  It should be appreciated that no grading system can account for all eventualities.  A solitary major hazard (e.g. one steep hill or a difficult junction) will not necessarily raise an otherwise ‘Easy’ route into a ‘Difficult’ one.  If in doubt, get off and walk.
